Undoubtedly, religious beliefs affect the way in which an individual will act upon their natural instinct for
sexual desires. Most religions have moral codes that address the way in which a member of their religion should regard their sexuality. One of the most traditional aspects of a strict Christian faith is that the Christian will not
engage in sexual activity until they are married, with celibacy and virginity being highly praise in the religion. As The Vampire Diaries is a television series that runs on The CW Network (thus targeted to young adults and have a censorship warning before each episode), there is explicit sexual content that plays a significant role in lives of the characters within the show. The characters engage in sexual activities with people who they are not married to, as well as having multiple partners. Sexuality is a key theme in The Vampire Diaries, and as one of the most highest rated shows on the network, this will inevitably continue until the series finishes.
Another topic in terms of religion and sexuality is the idea of differing sexual orientations. The Vampire Diaries has recently introduced their first homosexual character, Luke, into their cast. He befriends Elena and becomes
an asset to overcoming Kai and keeping everybody safe. It is no secret that the traditional Christian religion does not support homosexuality, and believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The Vampire Diaries rejects this notion, and openly discusses Luke's sexual orientation at 2:10 of the video at the bottom of these page.
