In conclusion, there are multiple religious themes that are explored in the television series, The Vampire Diaries. As each major religion has their own moral understandings of these themes, it is important to recognize their incorporation within the television show, and how the portrayal of these themes reach mass audiences when it is internationally broadcasted each week. As a viewer, it is evident that religion plays a significant role in shaping the characters as well as the television series as a whole. The variety of religious themes that I have presented are integrated within the plots and major story lines, thus allowing for the reflection of religion to represent significant subject matter.
Along with the overall theme of the supernatural, the prevalent roles of vampirism and witchcraft in this series offer views on occultism and witchcraft that represent positive connotations, as opposed to spirituality being something that must be evil. The moral ambiguity and questionable ethics of some of the characters in The Vampire Diaries portray particular religious themes (such as sacrificial deaths) as an unnecessary evil, whilst also demonstrating other religious themes (such as the seven deadly sins) that in fact parallel that of religious beliefs. This television series takes a stance on each of these themes in relation to religion without fully committing to opposing one specific ideology, thus broadening viewership as they allow for a variety of beliefs. Although it is a vampire show, it explores life, love, and relatable notions that enable the audience to make their own interpretations. Whether it is supporting the theme, or opposing the traditional norm, it is evident that The Vampire Diaries demonstrates a variety of religious themes, as presented in the pages of this website.
