In Unit Three, we learned that the Bible expressly forbids Christians “to have among them” someone who practices divination, enchantments, sorcery, necromancy, and so on. As witches, warlocks, and the act of witchcraft play significant roles in The Vampire Diaries, "people” like Bonnie Bennett (Elena Gilbert's best friend) are exactly the kind of people the Bible forbids Christians to interact with. Now, also in Unit Three, we touched on the idea that if it "quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, and flies like a duck, then it is a duck." The Vampire Diaries is a fictional television show, however, if we use the "duck" theory, then by analogical reasoning, if Bonnie and her family casts spells, makes potions, talk to the dead, and so on, then it is reasonable to conclude that they are, in fact, exactly the kind of people forbidden by the Bible. The Christian faith views occultism as the act of anything supernatural or paranormal which is not achieved by God, and is therefore evil. However, there are some religions that embrace the idea of occultism as an integral aspect of mystical religious experience. Religions such as Wicca, witchcraft is celebrated and does not have negative connotations.
The history of magic and witchcraft in The Vampire Diaries plays a significant role in the story lines of the plot, as well as the lives of the characters. The "Bennett" family (such as Bonnie and Grams) are the strongest witches, and have utilized their powers in numerous situations in the series. A lot of magic that is in this show has caused deaths and evil wrongdoing, as witches are often tricked into doing black magic by the villainous vampires. Below is a video of Bonnie first telling Elena she is a witch, a fan made compilation of Bonnie casting spells, and photos of the Bennett family using their powers, thus demonstrating the portrayal of witchcraft in The Vampire Diaries.
